Public Health Careers
People who work in one of the various public health careers deal with the physical, mental, and environmental health of communities and populations at risk for disease and injury. Some of these health risks include chronic diseases, toxic wastes, hazardous chemicals, and the health of infants and mothers. Professionals in public health careers place an emphasis on an entire population instead of on individual patients, as well as on the prevention of illnesses instead of the specific treatment of them. Public health officials have also developed the necessary skills to identify, assess, plan, monitor, advocate, and evaluate these problems and issues.
Possible Occupations in Public Health Public health is a field which encompasses many subfields such as medicine, nursing, dentistry, law, education, and biological, social, and behavioral sciences. There are many public health careers available from which to choose. Some of these include health care management and administration, epidemiology, environmental health science, and biostatistics. Other public health workers are public health practitioners, nutritionists, and biomedical scientists.
Education Needed If you are interested in working in any of the public health careers, you will at least need to earn a Bachelor of Science in Public Health degree. However, most positions in the public health field are now requiring master's degrees. You may choose from a Master of Public Health degree or a Master of Science in Public Health degree. Doctoral degrees are required for any job positions in public health dealing with research. Possible degrees of this level include the Doctor of Public Health and Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health degrees.
