Medical Insurance Careers

Introduction
Today, the majority of medical patients have insurance to cover their medical expenses. In order for health care providers to receive payment for their services, all medical services they provide must be processed by filing a claim with the patient's medical insurance providers. Filing a claim for reimbursement involves examining patient records, identifying diagnoses, and then selecting the appropriate codes for the services performed, and entering these codes into databases and submitting the claims to insurance companies electronically. This process is known as medical coding, and it is one of the many duties involved in medical insurance careers.

Training
Medical insurance careers include medical insurance coding and billing, bookkeeping, collections, insurance benefits assistance, and claims. Medical insurance careers can be complicated, therefore employers prefer to hire trained, and often certified individuals to ensure that their employees are proficient and familiar with different types of insurance plans and codes, and who have a solid understanding of the rules principles, and technology involved in medical insurance.

Training for medical insurance careers can be done in various ways. Often you can train on the job. You can also receive training at a formal vocational school, or through a two to four year college degree program. Curriculum in these programs includes an emphasis on medical terminology, medical insurance codes, and coding and billing computer applications. These training programs are designed to prepare you to meet the requirements for employment in medical offices, clinics, hospitals, and other health care facilities. Compared to most other occupations and disciplines in the health care industry, medical insurance training doesn't take long to complete, however, because rules and laws constantly change, as well as medical coding and billing software programs, training in the medical insurance field will likely continue throughout your career.

Compensation
Those who work in medical insurance careers are typically compensated according to their level of training and skills, and how effectively these skills are used, and are usually paid at an hourly rate.
